We are a new group of Kāpiti residents who care about urban trees and open spaces.
We want to influence the community and interested agencies to increase Kāpiti’s urban tree canopy and open spaces, to enhance the environment and promote wellbeing.
In recent years, Kāpiti has lost precious canopy cover. Trees …
- Reduce water run-off
- Assist flood control
- Minimise evaporation
- Cool
- Beautify
- Provide habitat and food for native animals
- Sequester carbon
We want to see:
- a 3-30-300 approach — every resident should be able to see at least 3 substantial trees from their house; we aim for 30% tree cover in every neighbourhood; and no house should be more than 300 metres from the nearest park or open space.
- Protection for specific trees through the Notable Tree, Key Indigenous Tree, Significant Natural Space and QEII covenant registration.
- Promotion of indigenous trees and the creation of corridors for native fauna.
- More value placed on trees and open spaces, less destruction by developers.
We seek your support — join our group, or support other local groups restoring specific localities.
